A fire broke out at the Hotel Pamposh, one of Srinagar's oldest hotels, and fire fighters were battling to extinguish it, officials said.
There was no loss of life as people were evacuated while one firefighter was injured and sent to hospital, Srinagar district collector Syed Abid Rasheed Shah told ANI.
He said that 20 to 22 fire tenders, teams of fire and emergency services, disaster management, and the State Disaster Response Force were at the spot to tackle the blaze.
The blaze broke around 2 pm and within minutes, leaping flames had engulfed the six storey building, a police officer said.
