India could be heading for a hotter summer and a weaker monsoon as El Niño conditions have emerged over the equatorial Pacific, raising concerns about drier weather and reduced rainfall across large parts of Asia. The Japan Meteorological Agency on June 10 confirmed that oceanic and atmospheric conditions associated with El Niño have developed, indicating that the climate phenomenon is now underway. Reacting to the development, India Meteorological Department Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the IMD would soon issue a statement based on the weather models it consults regarding the onset of El Niño conditions.
