At least eight people were killed and 19 others are feared trapped after landslides hit an under-construction tunnel of the Teesta hydroelectric project in Sikkim's Namchi district amid heavy rainfall. The incident took place at Samardung, where rescue teams recovered eight bodies from inside the tunnel. Police said 19 people are still feared trapped, while continuous rain and difficult terrain have hampered rescue efforts. According to officials, three initial rescue attempts failed because of adverse weather and challenging terrain conditions. The trapped workers are believed to be located around three kilometres inside the tunnel.
