Paris: Police Clash With Protesters as Tear Gas and Water Cannons Deployed on Day Two

France has faced widespread protests and unrest amid public anger over rising costs and declining public services. Reports from October 17 described clashes and property damage in several cities, with incidents including fires and confrontations involving police. The demonstrations have put pressure on authorities as they work to maintain public order while responding to protesters’ grievances. The unrest in France has also drawn comparisons with demonstrations in Italy, where police clashed with protesters in Milan. While the situations differ from city to city, the developments have renewed debate over economic pressures, public services and the government’s response. Authorities continue to assess the security situation.
