Takaichi faces Xi's wrath: China sets the record straight for Japan with ‘behave! ’, cancels G20 meet

Published on Nov 21, 2025 06:10 am IST

China has firmly rejected a proposed G20 meeting between Premier Li Qiang and Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, with Beijing demanding Tokyo “behave itself.” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning accused Japan of crossing red lines on Taiwan despite claiming no change in policy. Tensions escalated further after Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te posted a photo of Japanese sushi in solidarity with Tokyo. China has postponed a planned trilateral cultural summit with Japan and South Korea and announced a suspension of Japanese aquatic imports, citing public anger. The dispute follows Takaichi’s remarks suggesting Japan could respond militarily to any conflict over Taiwan.
