‘Cold-war era tensions…’: Xi Jinping warns amid QUAD grouping, US support to Taiwan

Chinese president Xi Jinping warns against the Asia-Pacific region returning to the Cold War-era tensions. Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) hosted by New Zealand, Xi said the Asia-Pacific region should reject practices of discrimination and exclusion of others. "Attempts to draw ideological lines or form small circles on geopolitical grounds are bound to fail. The Asia-Pacific region cannot and should not relapse into the confrontation and division of the Cold War era," Xi said. The Chinese president’s comments were an apparent reference to US efforts with regional allies. The QUAD – the US, India, Japan, and Australia – is seen as a counterweight to China in the Indo-Pacific region. This also comes at a time when the Biden administration has been supporting Taiwan.
