Fico blasts EU’s Russian energy ban as “Nonsense,” warns of security risks

Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico fiercely condemned the European Union’s plan to phase out Russian energy, calling the bloc’s push “complete nonsense” and warning that banning Russian nuclear fuel is “dangerous” and risks EU competitiveness. Speaking at the ENEF nuclear forum in Bratislava, Fico insisted switching nuclear fuel suppliers is unsafe for Slovakia’s Soviet-designed reactors, likening it to putting a Mercedes engine in a Skoda. He highlighted that nuclear power is vital—providing 60% of Slovakia’s electricity—and announced a new Bohunice plant reactor in partnership with a U.S. contractor, while noting Washington still imports Russian uranium.
