Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that the situation in salt mining city of Bakhmut was worsening as Russian troops besieging it stepped up their assault in a bid to encircle it. The commander of Ukrainian ground forces also said that the situation was 'extremely tense'. Russian forces are trying to cut the Ukrainian supply lines to the city. If captured, Bakhmut would give Russia its first major prize in more than half a year. It will also open up the way to the capture of the last remaining urban centres in the Donetsk region.
