Bruised and neglected: The story of 200 Yazidis freed by IS group in Iraq

Updated on Jan 19, 2015 01:42 pm IST

About 200 minority Yazidis were released by the Islamic State group in northern Iraq, likely because the elderly captives were slowing the militants down. Officials say most are in poor health and show signs of abuse or neglect. After they were dropped off near the Kurdish regional capital of Irbil, the former captives were being questioned and receiving medical treatment. Tens of thousands of Yazidis fled in August when the Islamic State group captured the Northern Iraqi town of Singar, near the Syrian border. But hundreds were taken captive by the group with some Yazidi women forced into slavery.
