The crash happened in a hilly and forested area about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Diani airstrip, authorities said. The Associated Press quoted Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde saying that relief operations at the crash site were underway as further details are awaited. Most of the people on board were tourists.

According to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, 12 people were onboard the aircraft as the cause of the crash is being ascertained. Visuals shared on social media showed parts of the plane on fire, strewn in a forest area. Hindustan Times could not independently verify the authenticity of the visuals.

In a press release, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed that an aircraft with registration number 5Y-CCA, en route from Diani to Kichwa Tembo, crashed at 0530Z. “The aircraft had 12 persons on board. Government agencies are already on site to establish the cause of the accident and its impact,” it said.

According to Flightradar24, the plane, a Cessna Grand Caravan, is likely to have crashed close to its destination after it departed from Mombasa to Maasai Mara which is a popular tourist destination and features the annual wildebeest migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Earlier last week, three people were killed after a small plane crashed in Bath Township, Michigan, near the intersection of Clark Road and Peacock Road. Police confirmed that they responded to the crash around 5 pm and confirmed that three passengers on the plane were found dead.
