UK prime minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday shared some pictures of his family's pharmacy in Southampton where he worked as a child. This comes as Britain's pharmacists will soon be able to prescribe drugs that were previously only authorised by doctors, under government plans unveiled Tuesday to ease pressure on the state-run National Health Service.

“When I talk about the NHS, I’m talking about my family’s calling,” Sunak wrote on Instagram.

“My Dad was a doctor, and I grew up working in the pharmacy, pictured here, with my Mum.”

“It was incredible to pay that same pharmacy a visit yesterday, as we launched plans that will allow them to give out common prescriptions and do routine tests. These are measures that will reduce pressure on our hard-working GPs and will cut waiting lists for patients,” he said on his government's latest health policies.

Sunak's spokesperson had previously said his travel arrangements made the “most effective use of his time”. The spokesman has defended the helicopter trip, saying: "His transport will vary depending on his time and where he's going to make the best use of both his time and in the interest of the taxpayer.
