The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified a recall of over 1.5 million eggs as the most serious due to potential Salmonella contamination.
On Wednesday, the voluntary recall was assigned a "Class I" designation, with the FDA cautioning that there is a “situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” as per 10 WBNS.
Midwest Poultry Services eggs recall: Which states and brands are affected?
Midwest Poultry Services initiated the recall on July 22 after discovering the problem at two of its farms in Texas "through environmental monitoring practices and root cause analysis." In the initial recall announcement made in July, the company stated that it would cease the distribution of eggs from the Texas sites.
Midwest Poultry Services distributed eggs to Kroger and Brookshire Grocery Company locations in six U.S. states: Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
The recalled eggs were marketed under various brand names, such as Kroger, Simple Truth Cage Free, Brookshire’s, Country Morning, and Sunups, with sell-by or best-by dates ranging from July 20 to August 17.
Only eggs that bear the identifying plant codes P-1950 or 0840962, along with a Julian Date ranging from 157 to 184 printed on the side of the carton, are impacted. Consumers can locate this code printed in date-coding ink on either the left or right side of the carton. The FDA has included examples of these codes in the images provided below.
What is Salmonella Enteritidis? All on warning and refund
Salmonella Enteritidis has the potential to lead to severe and occasionally lethal infections, especially among young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Symptoms may consist of fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. In uncommon instances, the infection can infiltrate the bloodstream, resulting in more serious health issues.
Consumers who bought the recalled eggs are strongly advised against consuming them and should return the products to the retailer for a complete refund.
