"The pilot successfully ejected and is safe. There are no additional affected personnel," a statement from NAS Lemoore said. No further details on the crash were provided.

U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin, the maker of F-35 fighter jets did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.

Naval Air Station Lemoore is the Navy’s primary base for its strike fighter aircraft operations on the West Coast and plays a central role in preparing aviators for combat readiness.

The F-35C Lightning II aircraft is the world's only fifth-generation aircraft, as per the US Naval Academy.

As per USNA, the F-35C Carrier Variant “sets new standards in weapon system integration, lethality, maintainability, combat radius and payload that bring true multi-mission power projection capability from the sea.”

CNN further added that the crashed jet was an F-35C, which is one of the three variants of the F-35 Lightning II, designed for use on US aircraft carriers. The US Air Force flies the F-35A while the Marine Corps flies the F-35B, a short takeoff, vertical landing jet.
