Smoke was reported in and around Denver, Colorado, on Saturday, prompting residents to speculate about the source of the fire. People in Commerce City and Aurora also reported seeing smoke. According to a post on X by the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), the smoke is a result of prescribed fire activity at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.
The post on X clarified that the fire was scheduled for Saturday and explained: “Smoke will be visible. Please do not report or call 911.”
The refuge also provided details about temporary closures, stating, “Wildlife Drive remains OPEN although short closure may be possible due to operational need and visitor safety. Trail closures will be in place for sections of the Lake Ladora Loop, Locust Loop Trail and the Army Historic Trail. Lake Ladora Upper Parking Lot will be closed.”
“Information will continue to be shared and posted here. Prescribed burns are weather dependent. We understand that weekends have higher visitation and thank visitors for their patience and continued support.”

According to Denver7, the prescribed burns at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge are set to continue until March 18, with plans to burn up to 2,836 acres.

In a press release, the refuge emphasized, “Safety is the number one priority, and every burn is carefully planned to ensure the safety of the surrounding community, the public and the firefighters.”
