Seeking India's intervention in stopping "genocide" of Tamils in Sri Lanka, members of the Indian community, Muslim religious groups and human rights organisations held a demonstration in Durban on Wednesday.
The protestors, which included women clad in saris, sang Tamil freedom songs and called on the international community, especially India, to save the innocent civilians caught in the war between Sri Lanka and Tamil Tigers.
The demonstrators carried placards and banners that read: "Sri Lanka stop the genocide of Tamils", "The international community cannot standby and watch the massacre of innocent Tamils", and "We want peace on the island".
A number of Muslim religious groups and human rights organisations supported the protest.
Chairman of the Tamil Co-Ordinating Committee, Richard Govender, said the demonstration was aimed at showing the world that "Tamils everywhere are angry at what is going on in Sri Lanka".
"We want peace on the island and the Sri Lankan should negotiate with the Tamil Tigers," he said.
Mickey Chetty, president of the South African Tamil Federation, said he had held talks with the South African Government about the "humanitarian crisis" the Tamils are facing.
