Police said accused Asha Ram, 45, attacked his daughter, Soniya, at 5am when she was asleep and then threw her down from the first floor terrace to an adjacent bylane.

“Asha Ram said that he tried to persuade his daughter to snap his relations with the man but she was adamant on marrying him. Asha Ram surrendered at a police station,” said Anil Kumar Yadav, circle officer (Loni).

Police sources said Soniya has four siblings -- a brother, who had gone to a relative’s house in Haryana, and two younger sisters. Before hacking his daughter, Asha Ram sent his wife to purchase milk from a nearby market.

The Ghaziabad police lodged an FIR at the Loni Border police station in the case on a complaint by the victim’s mother. The family hails from Bahora Patiyali in Etah district.

“I implored her, even touched her feet to get herself out of the relationship... but she did not listen to me... I was left with no option but to take this step... I killed her and I have no regrets,” said Ram.

The police said that the woman had eloped with some other boy around three years ago but her father found her soon after she went missing.

“Then, the family did not report the matter to police. Later, she came in contact with a man who resides in Loni. She wanted to marry him against her family’s wishes. After her father surrendered before the police, we also recovered the axe used in the crime,” said Yadav.
