The woman, in a critical condition, was immediately admitted to a private hospital in Mohan Nagar from where she was referred to GTB Hospital in Delhi.

The victim, Najma, was walking from street number 5 after dropping her 12-year-old daughter at her tuition class and was heading towards her residence in street number 7 when she was shot. The victim’s family said they suspect it to be a chain-snatching attempt.

“My daughter told us that she (Najma) was wearing a gold chain before she was shot but it is missing now. She also said that she saw two men on a bike standing near our house while she was leaving the residence with my wife,” Zahid, the victim’s husband, said.

He said that other ornaments of his wife were intact. “The gold earrings and the toe ring of my wife are intact though the chain is missing. It seems that she resisted their attempt to snatch the chain due to which they shot her,” Zahid, who works as an electrician at a private company in Delhi, said.

Anoop Singh, circle officer, Sahibabad, said, “We are investigating the case and an FIR will be lodged once we receive a complaint from the family. Eyewitnesses said they saw two men with helmets on a green Apache bike, which did not have a number plate, fleeing the spot. It seems to be a case of personal rivalry. If it is found to be a robbery attempt, we will register a case accordingly. The accused will be nabbed soon.”
