Biopics like Sully, The Founder and Snowden are all vying for Oscars this awards season.

Hollywood has once again proved its love of true stories, biopics and real-life events, with a selection of films coming to theatres this fall hoping to score success with moviegoers and bag nominations for the 2017 Oscars.

War Dogs

Inspired by a Rolling Stone article, the latest movie from Todd Phillips (”The Hangover”) follows two teenage stoners from Miami Beach who, following a strange set of circumstances, find themselves supplying arms to the US government. Initially set to star Jesse Eisenberg and Shia LaBeouf, Jonah Hill and Miles Teller were eventually cast in the roles of Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz. Bradley Cooper is also on the cast of this comedy drama, picked to close the 42nd Deauville American Film Festival in France, September 11.

Another potential candidate for a coveted golden statuette, this latest movie from Clint Eastwood tells the true story of American airline pilot Captain Sullenberger, who successfully ditched a passenger jet in New York’s Hudson River in 2009, saving the lives of hundreds of passengers. For the first time in his career, the director has picked Tom Hanks for the lead role. The actor -- who already has two Oscars to his name (for “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump”) -- is joined on the cast by Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney.

US release: September 9

After being pushed back several times, Oliver Stone’s biopic of the former US National Security Agency contractor, Edward Snowden, who leaked classified information from the NSA in 2013, is finally due to land in theaters this fall. Jospeh Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Nicolas Cage, Scott Eastwood, Melissa Leo, Timothy Olyphant and Zachary Quinto star in the movie that could pick up nominations for the 2017 Oscars.

US release: September 16

Deepwater Horizon

Peter Berg directs this upcoming action movie based on the largest oil spill in history, which took place in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 following an accidental explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russel, Kate Hudson, Dylan O’Brien and John Malkovich star in the film.

US release: September 30

The Founder

After bringing the story of Walt Disney and “Mary Poppins” author P. L. Travers to the big screen in 2014 (”Saving Mr Banks”), John Lee Hancock has chosen entrepreneur Ray Kroc as the subject of his new movie. Michael Keaton steps into the role of this visionary businessman who transformed a small hamburger chain started by the McDonald brothers into a global fast-food empire.

US release: December 16
