In a shocking incident, two persons allegedly killed a 35-year-old woman in rural Patna by inserting an iron rod in her private parts after she resisted a rape attempt by them.

The crime, reminiscent of the December 16, 2012 incident in Delhi which triggered nationwide outrage, took place when the woman had gone to an agricultural field to attend the nature’s call at Baliyavan village in Naubatpur police station area in Patna district on Wednesday.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Friday took cognizance of the case and sought a detailed report from Bihar police.

Confirming the incident, city superintendent of police (Patna west) Rabindra Kumar said accused Dheeraj Kumar Paswan, 22, and Dharmendra Kumar,30, fled from the scene after committing the heinous crime, while the woman was referred to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) by Naubatpur referral hospital. She succumbed to her injuries at PMCH during treatment on Thursday, Kumar said.

The city SP said the postmortem examination suggested that internal injuries were the cause of her death.

“Dheeraj and the woman, mother of four children, knew each other,” the city SP said, adding that her husband worked as daily wage labourer. Acting swiftly, the police arrested main accused Dheeraj on Wednesday, Kumar said. The other accused was still at large,” the city SP added.

According to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) figures, 34,210 girls and women were raped across the country in 2015 and Bihar ranked 14th in rape incidents.

Data available with Bihar police headquarters showed Katihar district reported maximum rape incidents (71) between January and September 2017, followed by Patna (61), Araria (46) and Bhagalpur (45). Thirty-eight rape incidents took place in Madhubani, 35 in Gaya while 26 each in Saran and Darbhanga districts during the period. Between 2001 and 2017, the maximum number of rape cases in Bihar was reported in 2013 (1128). In 2014, the figure was 1127, which came down to 1041 next year and to 1008 in 2016.
