Hours after the Supreme Court upheld that the consensual sex between adults of the same-gender was an offence, yoga guru Baba Ramdev offered to “cure homosexuals" at his Patanjali ashram in Haridwar.

“I invite them to my ashram. Two people belonging to opposite sex will be kept in one room for a few days and they will be cured of homosexuality,” Ramdev told reporters today.

Welcoming the SC ruling, Ramdev said, “The practice of homosexuality is unscientific, unnatural, uncivilised, immoral, irreligious and abnormal.”

“Homosexuality is not genetic. If our parents were homosexuals, then we would not have been born. So it's unnatural," he said.

He also questioned the contribution of the gay community in streams like science and economics and also said that he would pray that all the journalists present at the press conference would not “turn” into homosexuals.

Ramdev’s press secretary SK Tijarawala had filed a PIL the July 2009 order of the Delhi High Court, which had decriminalised consensual gay sex.

Reacting angrily to Ramdev’s “cure” offer, prominent LGBT activist Ashley Tellis said, "It is a fundamentally irrational, unscientific, illogical and brainless statement. There is nothing more to comment on it."

Harrish Iyer, an equal rights activist, said, “I respect Baba Ramdev for his yoga lessons, but only for that. Science has proved that homosexuality is not a disease. It has even been delisted from the list of mental illness by psychiatric institutions all over the world.”

“If Ramdev thinks he has another version that can disprove science, let him publish it," Iyer said.
