Residents of Preet Nagar here were in for a shock when they noticed a pack of dogs savouring flesh which was later found out to be a foetus.
People repulsed the dogs and informed the Daba Police who took it to the civil hospital for post-mortem. They registered a case under section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of body) of the Indian penal code (IPC) and initiated investigation.
The case was registered following the statement of Pritam Singh of the colony who was the first to notice it on Monday evening. He said, “I immediately informed the area residents and called the police.”
Assistant sub-inspector Tarsem Singh said the foetus was in a bad condition and it was hard to identify its gender.
He added, “We are inquiring all the hospitals, nursing homes and mid-wives of the area to know about pregnant women who had delivered a child in the past few days.
He said it was suspected it could be caper of some unmarried woman, who might have terminated her pregnancy to avoid social stigma.
