Celebrating the 125th birth anniversary of eminent artist, Jamini Roy, the Capital is hosting a special exhibition titled, Jamini Roy (1887- 1972): Journey to the Roots.
The exhibition will showcase around 200 of Roy’s artworks including paintings, sculptures, sketches and drawings. “Reclaiming Jamini Roy’s genius has been an exciting project for me particularly in the context of his 125th birth anniversary,” says Ella Datta, curator of the show.
The ongoing exhibit at National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) will also showcase works from the personal collection of artists Abhishek Poddar and A Ramachandaran. "This exhibition not only tracks the evolution of this early modernist master but also bears testimony to the joyous expression of the innocence in the spirit of village society," says Prof Rajeev Lochan, director, NGMA. "Roy was a versatile experimental artist. Indeed, his 125th birth anniversary is a fitting occasion to put on display this collection," he adds.
The show features paintings and drawings, photographs of the artist and explanatory wall text. Roy was one of the earliest and a significant modernist of 20th century Indian art. The exhibition brings to the fore the nature of his modernism and the prominent role he played in breaking away from the art practices of his time. His artworks mainly focus on the ordinary life of rural people, scenes from Krishna Leela, epics and folk cults.
