Five Point Someone

will be staged in the city for the first time. The theatrical adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s cult novel, first enacted three years ago in Chennai, will also mark the author’s theatrical debut, as he will do a cameo exclusively for the Mumbai performances.

“The cameo was supposed to be a secret but I guess everyone knows about it now,” laughs Bhagat, adding, “I’m not much of an actor, but the excitement of finally getting this play to my city after trying for two years made me want to do something special.”

The author, who was actively involved in theatre during his college days, attributes this stint to his ‘visual’ style of writing. And the director of the play, Sunil Vishnu K of Evam, agrees, saying “Some of the dialogues in the play are used verbatim from the novel. We didn’t have to make any changes at the core. It’s only been modified slightly to suit the play.”

Vishnu adds that having Bhagat on board adds tremendous value to the production. “Most plays that get adapted are by authors who have passed away. It’s rare to see a contemporary Indian book being adapted, and Chetan’s direct involvement is very exciting.”

“As a young group, our main aim has been to get theatre back into the lives of youngsters. Some of the people who have come to watch the play have entered a theatre for the first time,” beams Vishnu.
