There is possibly no replacement for the inimitable Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan — but for many of his fans, listening to his nephew Rahat Fateh Ali comes close.
Masroor, Nusrat's other nephew, is gearing to unleash a qawwali wave across the subcontinent. To make the lineage clear — Rahat is the son of the great qawwal's brother, while Masroor is Nusrat's sister's son.
Unlike his cousin, by now a Bollywood favourite, Masroor wants to keep his focus strictly on qawwali. The singer, in his late 20s, says he wants to start a new trend by propelling the genre to greater heights.
While lauding Rahat for his work in the classical music and fusion genres, Masroor says there will always be an audience for this music. The singer will perform on Monday, April 9, at the Music for Peace concert with Charanjit Soni. Soni is a disciple of Hindustani classical music exponent Shanti Hiranand, who was, in turn, trained by Begum Akhtar.
