Meet the members of the Dramatics society of Delhi University’s Sri Ram College of Commerce.

The Dramatics society of Sri Ram College of Commerce (that’s what they call themselves), has students from different courses but are bound by their common interest — theatre, and are passionate for the performing art.

Started in the 70s, the society is one of the oldest societies of the college. Today, it has more than 100 members and is divided into five teams — street play, Hindi play, English play, bilingual play and the organising team. But this division is not a problem.

“It’s not like the Hindi play team does not bond well with the English play team. We are united in every sense,” says Udai Srivastava, the secretary of the society.

One need not be a theatre person to qualify for the society. The primary quality this group looks for is talent. Not just acting but also in production, direction, back stage and management. To be a member, you should have a personality both on-stage and off-stage.

The society believes in regular practice and perfecting the production before going on stage. Giving their 100 per cent is far more important than winning the competition for them. “It’s not that we don’t want to win, but it’s also about being happy and content after each performance,” says Ayushya Kaul, the director of the Hindi production Samar.

The members share a good rapport with each other and they say, they almost know everything about each other. “We crack jokes, go out for outstation trips — it’s about building a long lived relationship,” says Srivastava.
