Bharatiya Janata Party leader from MP’s Tikamgarh, Harikirishna Gupta has finally got help from a private-run hospital in Bhopal to transplant his liver free of cost.
A year back, Gupta, 49, was detected with cirrhosis– a chronic liver disease. Medical experts say the only treatment is a transplant.
A liver transplant costs between Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. Not having fund for the transplant, Gupta’s son, Amit decided to sell a portion of his house for Rs 11 lakh.

After trying to arrange funds for the liver transplant for more than a year, Amit managed to collect Rs 11 lakh. But when he approached a private hospital in Delhi for the operation, PM Narendra Modi announced to demonetisation high-value banknotes and the hospital refused to accept the scrapped 1,000 and 500-rupees notes.
“We went to Delhi with the amount in early November but by then the Centre scrapped high-value banknotes. We had no idea what to do, how to arrange the new currency of such a huge amount and how to withdraw money in a new city,” Amit told HT. “We lost hope and came back to Bhopal.”
Gupta’s condition deteriorated and the family could not arrange the required money.

{{/usCountry}}After seeing messages for help on social media, a private hospital came to the Gupta family’s rescue.
“Bansal hospital called us and said they are ready to perform the surgery free of cost. I did not even imagine something like this can also happen and someone would offer help this way,” said Amit.
“This was a case from Madhya Pradesh and after looking at the sensitivity of the matter we decided to help,” said DK Verma, chief executive officer at the hospital.
“We approached the Hyderabad-based Yashoda group of hospitals to help us. We are waiting for Gupta’s condition to stabilize first.”
