The Madhya Pradesh jail administration has prohibited family members and relatives of inmates from bringing outside items for them. The prohibition was implemented with effect from Friday after it had issued a circular about its implementation in all the 122 jails of the state including central jails, district jails and sub-jails.
“The decision was taken to enhance the security in all the jails of the state. Earlier the relatives or family members of undertrials were allowed to bring outside items like clothes, dry fruits and other eatables but now it is not permissible any more. They are now allowed to bring only four pairs of clothes and one pair of shoes,” said director general (jail), Sanjay Choudhary while speaking to HT on the issue.
He said that the decision was taken after misuse of the rule to bring outside items for inmates happened on a regular basis.
“During routine checking in jails, officials found banned items, including charas, razor blades and many other illegal things which are a security threat. In the investigations of the jail break incident in which eight SIMI operatives escaped from the jail, investigators found dry fruits from the bag carried by them. The decision to prohibit certain items was taken according to the jail manual,” said Choudhary.
He said jail officials have also asked all inmates to surrender any illegal item, possessed by them, by December 14.
