Former Union minister and senior Congress leader Aslam Sher Khan's recent statement that the party gave tickets to weak candidates for the municipal polls kicked up dust in the already infighting-plagued Congress in MP. Khan further said he would support the independent candidates at some places.
Reacting to the statement, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Arun Yadav told media persons, 'Who is Aslam Sher Khan?'
Besides Yadav, Khan's remark also came under severe attack from another senior party leader and former MP Sajjan Singh Verma on Thursday.
Talking to media persons in Indore, Verma said the Khan should tell how many Muslims came to the Congress because of him. However, Khan stuck to his stand on the issue.
Talking to HT, Khan said fielding of weak candidates by the Congress was indicative of the fact that the party was in disarray in the state.
"Those running the party in the state are now toeing the BJP line, so they are trying to give the impression that they no longer need the support of Muslims. The reality is that this attitude has cost the party dear. In fact, they are falling in the BJP's trap."
Reacting to Yadav's statement, Khan said, "There is no question of my leaving the party. Not one, even ten Arun Yadavs can't make me expel from the party."

{{/usCountry}}He further said, "The backwards, the Dalits and the tribal people got distanced from the party due to the same attitude. They are also sending out the message that they don't need Muslim support."
The former Olympian added, "My leaders are Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Unfortunately, in MP, many Congress leaders are now dependent on the BJP's help to survive."
