From Big B to Modi, India mourns Manna Dey's death

Manna Dey gave voice to one of the best creations of his father - Madhushala. Amitabh Bachchan remembers Dey's rendition of the poetry as Bollywood laments the loss of a gem.

Legendary playback singer Manna Dey died at a Bangalore hospital early on Thursday after prolonged illness.

Dey, 94, who was admitted to Narayana Hrudayalaya five months ago for respiratory problems, died of cardiac arrest at 3:15am, a senior doctor at the hospital said.

His daughter Shumita Deb and his son-in-law Jnanranjan Deb were by his bedside when the end came, his family said.

Dey is survived by two daughters, one of whom is based in the US."We are saddened by his loss, but he died peacefully. His last rites will be performed later in the day," his son-in-law said.



His fans across the country mourn the loss.



Amitabh Bachchan emotionally wrote on Twitter, "Manna Dey, stalwart of the music world, passes away. Flooded with memories and his songs. In particular his rendition of Madhushala." And later added, "Manna Dey RIP .. !! Prayers and condolences to loved ones and family ! Strange how we connect events of our life with his songs !"
