Vidya Balan says the film gave her a chance to step into a pool in an Amrapali, slide down a slope and do a take-off on Sagar’s touch-me-not song.
The Dirty Picture was not difficult at all for me as an actor.
Yes, it was draining and demanding, but not difficult at all,” insists Vidya Balan, admitting that just as with every offer that comes her way, she took her time with this one too because she couldn’t visualise this character in her head, Silk being so unlike her and her previous screen avatars.
“But once I saw Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, I knew Milan (director Milan Luthria) would never cross the thin line between sensuality and sexuality. Today, I am happy this opportunity came to me and proud I didn’t let it get away.”
When she quizzed Milan on what kind of prep was expected of her, he surprised her by saying, “Nothing at all. Just be completely unapologetic about being completely uninhibited.”
Using that as her guideline, Vidya admits she wore her Sexuality On Her Sleeve and today is revelling in the rave reviews she’s been getting."I started 2011 with Sabrina Lall and ended it with Silk, two characters who are as far apart as the north and south poles. But at the end of it, I have to say that it’s been a Bindaas (carefree) year because it gave me a chance to live different lives and play out all my fantasies," she laughs.

Prod her on her Ooh La La Fantasies and Vidya admits that having watched videos of films like Himmatwala (1983), Tohfa (1984) and Sagar (1985) during school vacations, and chartbusters like Ek Do Teen… (Tezaab, 1988), Saara Zamana Haseenon Ka Deewana.. (Disco Dancer, 1982) and Hawawala Aa Gaya… (Dance Dance, 1982) on Doordarshan’s Chayageet, there was a dormant desire to flash back to the cinema of the 1980s with all its Latkas, Jhatkas and Thumkas (dance moves) that are missing from today’s synchronised item numbers.
"I wanted to, but never thought I would get a chance to roll down a slope, step into a lotus pool in an Amrapali outfit or have a hero unravelling my sari, a la Sagar, while I coyly entreat him not to touch me… Jaane do na, paas aa oo na, chuona, chuona mujhe…," she smiles.
“The Dirty Picture has been a dream come true. Silk has liberated not just the woman in me, but the child too,” she retreated.
