It’s 18th Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26 and on the occasion, actor Rakul Preet Singh reminiscences how painful it was for some of her friends and acquaintances, who lost their family members at the Kargil War. Being an army kid (her father is Retd. Colonel Kulvinder Singh), Rakul feels that not everyone in the country is aware of the significance of the Kargil Vijay Diwas.
“My heart reaches out to those who lost their near and dear ones during the war. I think the day should be celebrated with much more awareness, especially among the youth, so that they understand that the reason we are living happily is because our forces are deployed at the borders and they are doing everything to save our nation,” says Rakul.
Along with the sense of pride for being an army kid, the Yaariyan (2013) actor adds that it’s also painful to think about wars. “A part of me is saddened thinking that we are living in a world where humans fight against humans to be at peace,” she adds.
Though Rakul’s father did not fight at the Kargil War but he was part of a similar situation that took place two years after the 1999 war. “There was a cold war going on between India and Pakistan just two years after the Kargil War and my dad was posted in Rajasthan at the Indo-Pak border. The situation was so critical that everyone was expecting another war, like Kargil. I saw my mother getting stressed and her health getting affected, though we were too young to understand what was happening at that time,” recalls Rakul.

{{/usCountry}}The actor also wants to take this opportunity to put some light on the army life, which at times looks glamorous from outside. “People who see us from outside feel that the army life has lots of perks and feels that we are very fortunate. But do they realise that it is actually a tough life? I don’t think we have enough media attention towards them and the life their family members live. Do people know how they fight at the border, facing extreme conditions, and how their families spend sleepless nights when they cannot connect with them? I feel the Indian Army and our security forces deserves to be lauded for these efforts,” she says.
