Sanjay Dutt’s life has powered the biggest box office phenomenon of the year, Sanju. The success of the Rajkumar Hirani film and interest in his controversial life suggests that he still has his fan base intact. As Sanjay Dutt turns 59 can he bank on Sanju’s success? Sanjay Dutt celebrates his birthday today.

For, the film also had Ranbir Kapoor, one of the biggest stars of the younger generation, playing the actor, and it was produced and directed by some of the biggest names in the Hindi film industry. So, everybody was waiting for Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 in which Sanjay was playing a role quite similar to his gangster avatars in the ‘2000s.

However, the film’s performance at the box office is quite dismal despite being a known and mostly appreciated franchise. The director, Tigmanshu Dhulia, also has a fan following of his own. It released with Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible-Fallout and that made its journey even more difficult.

Prior to this, Sanjay was seen in Bhoomi, his comeback to acting after a gap of three years. He played a helpless father in the film. The film failed to do any miracle for Sanjay at the ticket window. As per film trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Bhoomi raked in only Rs 2.25 crore on its opening day. It wasn’t a great show by any standards.

Sanjay can’t complain about Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3’s timing as it released weeks after Sanju when everybody was talking about his life. Does this mean he is finished as a star?

Well, it’s too early to say that, because he still has big-pocket producers rooting for him. Take a look at the list of his forthcoming films. He has at least four big projects lined up.

He will once again be working with the makers of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 in Torbaaz, and guess what? He is the solo lead in the film, at least box office stature wise. He is playing an army officer in the film that’s expected to hit the screens in November, this year.

Then he will be a part of the Hindi remake of Telugu hit Prasthanam. The film is likely to have another sizeable presence as well in the lead, but Sanjay is certainly going to be the highlight during marketing.

Then there is Kalank, a Karan Johar production with a crowd of big stars including Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, among others. Sanjay might not be considered a huge crowd-puller on his own, but he increases the value of an ensemble cast for sure. Plus, his image makes it hard for filmmakers casting him to not give him a good screen time. In short, Kalank could be the film he is waiting for all this while.

His fourth film in the pipeline is Ashutosh Gowariker’s Panipat in which he is playing Ahmad Shah Abdali. This is likely to be a negative role and we all know how he has fared in films like Agneepath. It doesn’t seem audacious to anticipate that Panipat might get Sanjay for such roles if he is willing to stretch it.

Will these many projects set to hit theatres, can we really say that Sanjay Dutt’s career is going downhill?
