In advance of filmmaker Peter Jackson’s much-anticipated movie release The Hobbit next year, a Lord of the Rings scholar is brewing up a cookbook of recipes inspired by Middle-Earth.
According to popular food blog Eater.com, JRR Tolkien scholar Astrid Tuttle Winegar will be releasing a cookery book entitled A Hobbits’s Cookbook: Eleventy-one Sweets, Snacks, And Savories Inspired by Middle-Earth.
Winegar’s title would add to a string of Middle-Earth cookbooks and websites. Regional Cooking from Middle Earth: Recipes of the Third Age is written by “Emerald Took,” a hobbit alias for Pittsburgh author Stephanie Simmons.
Recipes include Middle-Earth versions of focaccia bread, herb-crusted salmon with simmered cabbage and bison served in a sauce of beef stock, herbs and garlic.
Lord of the Rings fan site The Tolkien Society also has a section of Hobbit recipes like stewed rabbit, bannocks (tea-time buns) and seed cakes called Aunt Belladonna’s Recipe Book. In Tolkien’s hobbit world, Belladonna Took Baggins is Bilbo Baggins’ mother.
And California-based cookbook author Georgeanne Brennan is also set to release The Unofficial Hobbit Cookbook in future, adds Eater.com. Brennan is a prolific food
writer and cookbook author, who’s penned the cheese and holiday entertaining guides for gourmet cookware retailer Williams-Sonoma. She also wrote a Green Eggs and Ham Cookbook in homage to Dr. Seuss.
