Children are spending more time reading on electronic devices than on print medium including books , magazines and comics, a new study has revealed.
The annual survey of the reading habits of eight to 16-year-olds conducted by the National Literacy Trust, has found that 39 per cent of kids read daily using electronic devices including tablets and eReaders, while only 28 per cent read printed materials daily, the Independent reported.
It was found that the number of children reading eBooks has doubled in the last two years from six to 12 per cent.
The survey, which covered 34, 910 children between the ages of eight and 16, also shows that kids reading print are nearly twice as likely to be above average readers as children who read electronically.
In addition, it was also found that those who only read on screen are four times less likely to say they enjoy reading, which is 12 per cent compared with 51 per cent.
"Whilst we welcome the positive impact which technology has on bringing further reading opportunities to young people, it's crucial that reading in print is not cast aside,"Jonathan Douglas, director of the trust said.
