Three months after the demonetisation drive that sucked off Rs 15.44 lakh crore worth of high denomination notes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged countrymen to go digital for ending the menace of black money and promised steps to safeguard their interest.
Wishing Indians on World Consumer Rights Day, Modi said: “I urge consumers to embrace digital transactions & join the movement to end corruption and black money.”
The government is at the “forefront of several initiatives that protect the rights of the consumer and ensure their grievances are solved”, he said in a series of tweets.
“On World Consumer Rights Day we salute the consumer, on whose purchasing power the growth of our economy rests.”
On November 8, 2016, Modi announced scrapping of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes to fight the menace of black money, corruption and terror funding.
During the demonetisation drive, the government has offered a slew of discounts for digital transactions and launched a DigiDhan Vyapar Yojana and BHIM app to facilitate digital transactions for consumers and small traders.
The government is also in the process of enacting a Consumer Protection Bill in the ongoing Budget session of Parliament. The Bill aims to impose harsh penalties on endorsement of misleading ads among others, will be passed in the forthcoming Budget session of Parliament.

{{/usCountry}}In August this year, the Centre had introduced the Consumer Protection Bill 2015 in Lok Sabha, to repeal the 30-year-old Consumer Protection Act.
The government also plans a Consumer Protection Authority to fast-track grievance redressal of consumers on the lines of US and European countries.
