Ajay Singh-led SpiceJet has told the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the GMR-led consortium that operates the Indira Gandhi International airport, that it won’t move out of the airport’s domestic terminal, also known as Terminal 1D.
In a strongly worded letter to DIAL CEO I Prabhakara Rao, Singh said he would hold the authority responsible if there is any impact on SpiceJet’s business due to “misleading” reports of the airline shifting operations out of Terminal 1D or T1.
T1 is used by low-cost carriers SpiceJet, GoAir and IndiGo for domestic operations. There have been reports that SpiceJet and GoAir will be shifted to Terminal 2 as T1 is renovated. IGI’s T3 handles all international as well as some local flights.
DIAL refused to comment on the matter.
Singh said SpiceJet couldn’t shift operations to Terminal 2 on a temporary basis as it was against the interest of their customers. In the letter dated December 9 that was marked to the civil aviation secretary, the DGCA chief and chairman, Airports Authority of India, Singh said there have been media reports that indicate SpiceJet was shifting its operations from T1 to T2. SpiceJet had denied these reports, he said.
He said such reports confused SpiceJet passengers. “It may and might have impacted SpiceJet’s business interest. Please note that DIAL will be fully responsible if there has been or is any impact in future on SpiceJet’s business on account of these misleading media reports,” wrote Singh.

“It will be very difficult to convince any airline to move out of T1D, which is far more accessible,” said aviation expert Rajji Rai.
