Nifty crosses 5,500, Sensex touches new 30-mth high

Taking cue from strong showing in global markets, the Indian stock markets ended at at 30-month highs on Thursday.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) benchmark Nifty rose 61 points to close at 5,540.0 points, while the Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex rose 197.8 points to close at 18,454.90.

The Asian markets ended Thursday in the black, and the European markets were trading strongly when the Indian markets closed for the day.

In India the banking index and the FMCG index at the BSE emerged as the biggest gainers as they were up by 1.9 and 1.7 per cent respectively. Among the Sensex companies ACC topped with a gain of 4.9 per cent followed by ICICI Bank and HDFC that gained 4.4 per cent and 3.7 per cent respectively.

Foreign Institutional Investments have been at the center of the strong movement of the Indian markets as they have pumped in a total of Rs 55,000 crore in this calendar and Rs 7,308 crore in the month of August.
