Just a day after he was named as the next Air India (AI) chairman, Ashwani Lohani on Friday signalled he would go with his gut to provide a proactive leadership to fix the “beleaguered” airline.
A railway engineer service officer credited with turning around Delhi’s Hotel Ashok, Lohani had blamed the Air India leadership for its financial troubles in 2014.
In May last year, Lohani called AI’s losses a “bureaucratic disaster on expected lines”. Six months later, he tweeted again on the lack of leadership in the airline sector.
“Spicejet also sinks. On the pattern of Air India and Kingfisher, the impending demise of Spicejet may also be due to leadership failure,” Lohani tweeted in December.
SpiceJet was able to turn around after a leadership change the next month when its CEO Ajay Singh moved in. Now, it is the Lohani’s turn.
In a blog on Friday, the officer said he had always dreamt of heading AI.
Lohani rested his hopes to turn around the airline on its inner strength that had survived, even if its sheen had worn out. “Proactive leadership is the crux and playing on the front foot the easiest way,” he said. “Gut alone provides the right answers in commercial organisations. I have almost always realised.”
