Japanese consumer durables company Sony on Monday said it is planning to nearly double the sales of handycams in India to 1.2 lakh units by the next financial year riding on its new product range.

The company, which on Monday launched nine models of camcorder, said it has earmarked an investment of Rs 15 crore on marketing and promotional campaigns for the category in the next fiscal.

"Sony India introduces a whole new range of handycams with a plan to ... achieve 50 per cent growth in the camcorder
segment by Financial Year 2010-11," the company said in a statement.

The company said it has sold 80,000 handycams this fiscal and plans to sell around 1.2 lakh units by the next financial
year.

Commenting on the new range, Sony India Managing Director Masaru Tamagawa said, "Designed to fit every pocket, the models have been introduced at a very attractive price point of Rs 14,990 so that more people can enjoy video shooting."

"We have a high investment lined up for this category to keep Sony at the apex position in this segment," Tamagawa said.
