Amidst negotiations by the management, representatives of workers and officials of the state labour department to resolve the issue, a majority of 900-odd workers continue on strike at General Motors’ manufacturing plant at Halol in Gujarat.
The 900-odd workers had gone on strike on Friday, demanding a hike in wages and other facilities.
“A team of officials led by district labour officer has brought the management and the representatives of workers on negotiation table and they will resolve the issue by tomorrow,” said Panchmahal district collector Milind Toravane.
He said on Monday only 20% workers reported on duty. “I am hopeful that the issue will be thrashed out and work will resume from tomorrow. The main demand of the workers is higher wages,” he said, adding that senior officials of the management are negotiating with the representatives of workers.
According to him, the labour union at the GM plant is not registered one but they have some representatives who negotiate on behalf of the workers. Meanwhile, officials of General Motors were not reachable to the press despite several attempts.
The strike has come at a time during the festive season, the period where car sales surge the most. The strike has impacted production of premium hatchback Aveo UVA, the entry-level Aveo sedan, the mid-size Optra sedan, the Cruze sedan and the multi-utility Tavera, which are produced at Halol plant in central Gujarat.
