Yahoo! donates Hadoop cluster lab to IIT-B

In order to empower the faculty and research students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Yahoo! India R&D entered into an agreement with it and provided access to a cluster of servers running open source Hadoop software and web data.

In order to empower the faculty and research students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Yahoo! India R&D entered into an agreement with it and provided access to a cluster of servers running open source Hadoop software and web data.

"This is for the first time Yahoo! has donated the Hadoop cluster Lab facility to an institute in India. We want to ignite the minds of students to have a number of breakthroughs in the world of search-based technologies," Sr Vice-President, Prabhakar Raghavan, said inaugurating the facility here.

Although it was officially inaugurated today, the Hadoop cluster lab has been running for a few months, Prof S Sudarshan of the Computer Science and Engineering Department of IIT said.

The Hadoop cluster lab constitutes a total of 40 computers and 80 CPUs (two for each machine).

Raghavan said the cluster lab is large number of computers connected to solve various problems and is similar to parallel computing but "it will mainly focus on the problems we face at Yahoo."
