Thirty-two candidates who appeared in the Punjab Pre-Medical Entrance Test (PMET) conducted by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, on May 17 have approached the Punjab and Haryana high court, seeking cancellation of the examination.
The petitioners have alleged that BFUHS tried to conduct the exam for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in medical colleges of the state in a “clandestine” manner. For the three-hour examination, in which 15,000 candidates appeared, only one centre was set up -- Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar. This resulted in traffic chaos and harassment to students and nearly 300 could not take the test due to traffic jams and other reasons, the petitioners have submitted, demanding that a fresh examination be conducted by the university or some other agency.
They also alleged “glaring mistakes” in the question paper and questioned the university’s move to not put OMR (optical mark recognition) sheets and question papers online.
The single-judge bench of justice RK Jain, following the submissions from petitioners’ counsel Girish Agnihotri, has issued a notice to the Punjab government and BFUHS for June 5.
The students have also sought directions to the university to produce the entire procedure/steps taken for the conduct of the PMET and sought its evaluation. The petitioners alleged that the university could not maintain secrecy in the examination as students were allowed to sit in groups and invigilators were seen talking on the phone. Some students were allowed to appear in the examination after the scheduled start (11am) of the test, they claimed.
