As many as 500 residents paid the house tax on the first day with the hope to get honoured on the Independence Day, besides availing 40% rebate, which will be applicable for all those who deposit the tax in first two months. The administration collected about `6 lakh on Day One.

The UT administration had announced that it would honour first payer of house tax from each sector on the Independence Day with the 'Chandigarh Mitra'.

UT adviser Vijay Kumar Dev on Wednesday said residents will be able to pay house tax online from August 24. Dev, who visited the Sampark Centre at Sector 15, Chandigarh, on the first day of house tax collection, said, "I highly appreciate the response of the citizens of Chandigarh. House tax is a step towards the vision of a smart city and for residents' convenience, we are starting online collection of tax from August 24." The UT administration is also providing an online property tax calculator, through which the residents can calculate the exact amount to be paid, he said.

Other senior officials present during the event were home secretary Anurag Agarwal, deputy commissioner SB Deepak Kumar, municipal commissioner Bhawna Garg and SDM (central) Prince Dhawan.

They say I have paid house tax 15 times as compared to 2013. This time the form is very easy to fill. The UT should also start online payment of house tax. Hope the UT administration's efforts usher in a new era of development in the city.
RK Garg, RTI activist

For the first time, there was no chaos and everything was systematic. We could see the enthusiasm among people. I am happy that I deposited the house tax on the first day.
HL Aggarwal, general secretary, Residents Welfare Association, Sector 15
