The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced a major organisational restructuring in its Punjab unit on Saturday by constituting 13 zonal teams and several wings to deepen its presence in the state.
Addressing a press conference here, AAP state observer Sanjay Singh said the party's format had been changed from district-level to zonal-level. He said 13 zones had been set up in Punjab under the leadership of party’s state convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur. Each zone will include nine assembly constituencies and a Parliamentary constituency, said Singh.
A team from Delhi will also use its experience to strengthen the party in Punjab. The party has also formed youth, women, farmer, trader, transport, legal, intellectual, NRI, ex-servicemen and student wings, Singh added.
He said Chhotepur will continue to play his role of the party convener in the state. "There will be no change in the state executive," Singh added.
He said that there would be 13 zonal in-charges of the party who will work in their constituencies for the 2017 assembly elections.
The party has also appointed 13 zonal-level and 39 sector-level coordinators from Delhi for monitoring the functioning of party in the state. AAP will also start a dialogue process with the people of Punjab as started by the party in Delhi to know their problems. The problems and suggestions will then be incorporated in the party’s election manifesto.

“To raise people’s issues effectively, we need a strong organisation in Punjab,” said Singh. Drugs abuse in Punjab has affected the youth and is a burning issue. The Badal government has failed keep a check on use of drugs and ahs also failed to address the farmers’ issues, he added.
Meanwhile, all four AAP members of Parliament from Punjab were not present in Singh’s press conference. Chhotepur told HT that the party had contacted the MPs over phone to attend the programme.
