Lt. Col. Ankur Vashist said on Saturday that six armed militants entered Indian-controlled Kashmir and four were killed in a gun battle in the Keran region late Friday.

He said the two other suspected rebels returned to the Pakistan-controlled portion of Kashmir.
There was no independent confirmation of the incident.

More than 68,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed since rebel groups began fighting Indian forces in 1989.
