Calling the Punjab government and its police force incompetent, Gurdaspur member of Parliament (MP) Partap Singh Bajwa has demanded that the Shruti Sachdeva abduction case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In a communique to union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, the Congress MP has urged him to obtain a report from the Punjab governor on the law and order situation in the state and then take appropriate remedial measures to trace the teenaged girl.
Shruti was abducted from her home in Faridkot on September 24 at gunpoint. Bajwa stated in the communique that if need be, the case should be handed over to the CBI as the actions of the state government and the police were not only incomprehensible but also a mere eye-wash aimed at sweeping the matter under the carpet.
"Considering the sensitivity of the case, it should be attended to on a priority basis and the guilty brought to book," stated the letter while pointing out that abduction occurred on the home turf of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal, who also holds the home portfolio.
In the letter Bajwa alleged that the police, instead of making a sincere effort to trace the girl, started a vilification campaign against her and her family. He said the incident had led to an outpouring of anger against the police officials for their inept and lethargic attitude and servility towards their political masters.
"The Badal family, including MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who takes the high moral ground at the drop of a hat did not have the courage to visit and console the dejected family of the girl," Bajwa stated in the letter while also referring to Faridkot MP Paramjit Kaur Gulshan, who too did not visit the victim's family.
