Educated in Canada, an SAS Nagar-based youth, who got hooked to drugs and indulged in several criminal activities to fulfil his drug needs, was on Saturday sentenced to four-year-jail for vehicle thefts.

The convict, Sahil Kaushal (25) was also fined `5000 for vehicle theft from a Sector-34 parking.

“I was a drug addict and used to commit crimes for drugs, but now I am trying to reform myself,” said Sahil, who has been convicted of eight cases. He prayed before the court for leniency but his plea was rejected.

The case pertains to January 2014 when Sahil had stolen a Maruti Esteem car from a Sector-34 parking.

A businessman’s son, Sahil did his BBA from Canada. As many as 38 cases were registered against him, including those registered under the NDPS Act, snatching and burglary, at various police stations of the city.

In July 2014, with his arrested in an NDPS case, the UT police had claimed to have solved three theft cases.

Sahil and his gang used to steal only Maruti cars and motorcycles. He was arrested in May 2013, as member of a gang comprising six youths, for vehicle lifting. After changing the chassis numbers, fake numbers were fixed on these vehicles before selling them in the second hand car market.
