Even after spending Rs 1.1 crore on the construction of 18 hi-tech toilet blocks in various green belts 20 months ago, the municipal corporation (MC) has failed to open these to date. In March this year, it was decided that the toilets would be handed over to residents’ welfare associations (RWAs), but the MC has not taken any step in this direction.
Even after being pulled up by UT adviser Vijay Kumar Dev for poor maintenance of public toilets and for keeping the toilet blocks locked, MC officials have not budged.
It was in November 2013 that the civic body constructed 18 toilet blocks using the same technology by which a 10-storey building was constructed within 48 hours in SAS Nagar in 2012. The MC spent Rs 1.1 crore for employing this technology so that the toilets could be made operational soon.
A company, Synergy Thrislington, completed the work, mostly in green belts, within a month.
These toilets are located in Sectors 11, 15, 18, 19, 22, 29, 35, 37, 38, 40, 41, 42, 48, 47 and 56. They are made of modular steel structures using walls made of expanded polystyrene system. The material used in these toilets is insulated, which ensures better thermal conductivity and is eco-friendly too. The technology is earthquake-resistant up to zone five.
Congress councillor Pardeep Chhabra said: “It is a sheer wastage of public money. It would have been better if they had gone for concrete toilets. People are facing a lot of inconvenience.”
