Police said the victim’s throat was slit with a sharp-edged weapon. The matter came to fore on Monday evening when house owner Jaspal Singh visited his property to take monthly rent from his tenant, Saleem.

“However, I found the house locked from outside and extreme stench smell emanating from its rooms. I immediately called on the locals and informed the police,” Jaspal said.

A police team reached the spot and broke open the door to find the decomposed body. It was sent to the civil hospital in Phase 6 for post-mortem examination. During a search of the house, the police found chess pieces strewn all around.
Police said the man, who was yet to be identified, appeared to have been murdered over a week ago.

Jaspal told the police that Saleem and his wife, who were natives of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, rented the house around a month back. But they did not provide him their permanent address for police verification.
