With the arrest of a woman and four men, Haryana police on Sunday said they had busted a gang of cheats who would first trick rich people into friendship and then demand money by threatening to register false rape cases against them.

A police spokesperson said Rs 5.70 lakh cash, a revolver, live cartridges, some documents and a fake police identity card were recovered from them.

The spokesman said on June 13, a Kaithal resident lodged a complaint against a woman in Sadar police station for allegedly indulging in blackmailing.

The gang had allegedly extracted Rs 25.50 lakh and were demanding Rs 35 lakh more from different persons. The crime investigation agency (CIA) team arrested the woman in Kurukshetra on Saturday night.

During investigation, the spokesperson added, the woman revealed the names of other members of the gang.

The police later arrested the other members - Virender Kumar, Satish Kumar, Jaswinder Singh and Jagdeep Singh - from GT Road. The police recovered Rs 1.30 lakh from the woman, Rs 3.10 lakh from Virender, Rs 40,000 from Satish and Rs 90,000 from Jaswinder Singh, the spokesperson said.
